How to change a video's aspect ratio (16:9, 9:16, 1:1, 4:5)

Attach the video and say the shape you want, for example "make it square" or "make it 9:16". Recut either crops the picture to fill the new frame or keeps all of it and adds bars, and it never enlarges the picture unless you give it a width.

Just need to do it once? Try the free video resizer and trimmer: it runs in your browser, with no sign-up and no upload.

What to typeMake this video square. Keep everything in shot and use white bars.

Step by step

  1. Attach the videoAdd the clip to a Recut project.
  2. Say the shapeRecut understands 16:9 (widescreen), 9:16 (vertical), 1:1 (square) and 4:5 (portrait feed), and phrases like "make it vertical", "make it landscape" or "crop to 4:5".
  3. Say crop or barsCropping fills the frame and cuts off what doesn't fit. Keeping the whole picture adds bars, black or white. You can also give a width in pixels, such as 1080.
  4. Run itThe resize runs on your device at no model cost, and the result appears next to the original so you can compare them.

What Recut does

Without a width, Recut never makes the picture bigger than it was. Cropping cuts the largest piece of the new shape out of the source: a 1280×720 video cropped to 9:16 becomes 405×720. Keeping the whole picture builds the smallest frame of the new shape around it.

Give a width and Recut scales to it, for example 1080 for a 1080×1920 vertical video. Sizes are rounded to even numbers, which video encoders need.
